Government to abolish corporal punishment

Government exploring alternate options to eventually fully abolish corporal punishment.

This revilation was made by Education Minister Santia Bradshaw on Thursday, she was addressing the 14th Annual Child Research Conference at the Sir Arthur Lewis Institute of Social and Economic Studies of the University of the West Indies.

Bradshaw acknowledged government’s reluctance to amend section 41 of the Education Act and totally remove corporal punishment in keeping with key international obligations. She noted that social surveys show Barbadians are still very opposed to its abolition and said Government would have to step up public education programmes, to help stakeholders develop effective alternative approaches to corporal punishment.
